Messaging & Content Design Across a Complex Policy Organization

About Environmental Policy Innovation Group

The Environmental Policy Innovation Center (EPIC) is a nonprofit organization accelerating environmental progress. Its programs – Technology & Data, Water, and Restoration – serve audiences ranging from state agencies and tribal communities to federal funders and public stakeholders. Across a series of contracts, I served as writer and strategist, embedded across three program teams as well as the organization at large.

EPIC’s core communications challenges were ones of scale and complexity: multiple teams, overlapping initiatives, and highly technical work that needed to translate to varied audiences and be consistent across internal networks. My work across the organization addressed this at multiple levels.

From internal messaging architecture to external program launches, I helped build revised website architectures and materials audit checks & balances; produced written assets and coordinated templates; and led close studies of existing communications structures to offer revised processes for ease and synchronicity.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Across all engagements, the through-line was the same: absorb highly technical, multi-stakeholder material; identify the structural and messaging gaps; and produce outputs to give each team a clearer, more consistent way to communicate its highly important work to the world.

  • Org-Wide Website Renovation: My work helped create wireframe efficiencies, nested navigations, consistent page architectures, and priority copywriting revisions.through  content design and UX flows.
  • Technology & Data Team Messaging Framework: I built a revised messaging foundation for the Tech team, alongside base templates for external-facing materials and internal strategy documents.
  • Product Launches: Under the guidance of the Water team Deputy Director, I produced the full external communications suite for two marquee launches. Deliverables included press releases, launch newsletters, blog posts, and stakeholder-segmented LinkedIn content series.
  • Water Program Messaging: Developed internal messaging including purpose statements, boilerplates, and taglines, and translated the messaging into content design for web.
  • Program-specific Comms Guidelines & Web Content: EPIC’s Restoration team has a broad, overlapping structure and a complex web of stakeholders. I worked with them to develop comprehensive messaging principles including team naming and relational structure, belief and mission statements, capabilities, stakeholder definitions, and about texts. Deliverables spanned website copywriting, revised prospectus, newsletter templates, and Blog organization.
